  • Linked In - If you are not yet signed up at Linked In, I highly suggest it. This is a place where you can meet with like minds and learn. Sign up in groups that pertain to your areas of business and interest. You can then bounce your ideas off of others who have vast knowledge and you can ask questions in an informal setting, receiving answers from many sources, so you can choose which best suits your needs and abilities. It is also a great place to spread the news about your new company or product, in a manner that is not solicitation, but simply sharing your ideas and business goals. The more you participate in group discussions, the better; just make sure you have something of value to add to the conversation and are not just making small talk to be noticed. Offer help to others, and ask the questions you need answers to.
  • MeetUp - This site allows you to network locally with other business people. I love the way it allows me to easily find others in my area who are meeting weekly or monthly, to network, discuss strategies, exchange leads and ideas, etc. Check this one out and see who and what you can find in your area.
  • Merchant Circle - This site is like a local yellow pages for businesses and a way to pass on referrals to one another, etc. You can also post coupons, view deals and gain helpful advice.

Biznik is the only network created for independent business people by two independent business people who are on a mission to support business networking that doesn't suck.

  • Facebook - You may not like social media, but your future customers probably do. You need to be in their path, so they find you. Marketing is all about the customer and what they need, want and expect. They expect companies to have a Facebook presence - Be there. Make a public business page and post at least weekly to it. I also suggest promoting it with an ad, spending about $100 on this, so your page gets enough likes that it attracts others and builds your viewer base. Also, posting and liking on other pages that you "like" will make your presence visible. Simply make a page and not working on ways to grow it, does you no good. Be an active contributor and watch it grow.
  • Twitter - Another place they will be looking for you, so you had best be present. Use an easy to find name, that is either your business name or something that relates to your business so you are easily found by those whom you want to find you. Learn the language of Twitter and how to use the hashtags (#'s). These will help you gain the recognition that you need and want.
  • Pinterest - This site has become all the rave with so many, it is a place I suggest you be seen.
